If you want to rank well in the search engines for even the least competitive keyword terms then you will need some backlinks. But how much link juice your site will need will obviously depend on how the competition if for that term.
Not to worry though. Most of the sites are not aiming to rank well for specific buying keywords like the smart affiliate marketers are. They are smart because these kinds of terms are close to the buying stage so all their visitors are already just about ready to buy a product.
When it comes to backlinks the quality of the links you have to your site will always be more important than how many you have. A site with one backlink from a page rank 9 site will rank higher than a site with a hundred back links from page rank 1 sites. But how do you get these high quality links? Read on.
1) Guest post on blogs related to your niche market. Even if all you can get is a blog that is kind of related to your sites topic you should still go for it. It can be very difficult to find these blogs but by typing in the search engines something like "your sites topic + blog" will bring you some great results.
When you write guest posts do not make them sloppy like writing articles just for a back link. Instead make sure it is quality and then contact the webmaster of that site to see if he or she will do it for free.
2) Submit your site to directories. This can be time consuming but it is very effective once it happens. Free directories will always take the longest. But directories that make you pay are actually well worth the money.
The best free directory that you should always submit to is the open directory at dmoz.org. The best paid directories are Yahoo and Business.com. Make sure your site is developed before trying to submit anywhere.
3) Buy them. You would be surprised at how many marketers just buy links. They can really increase in prices. Like having a link on the home page of a related site with a page rank 7 could cost up to $150 a month. These are kind of rare though.
So what should you do? I suggest just starting off by following the old free ways of submitting articles and comment on blogs until your site makes progress. Then when you have money invest in some automated tools like article spinners and automated social bookmarking tools.
