On-Page Optimization - Creating a SEO Friendly Title Tag

The title tag is without a doubt the most important out of all tags.  It plays a big role for your rankings so it is important to create a SEO friendly title tag. If you wish to get better rankings in search engines results you should always include your keywords or keywords phrases in your title. Put your most important keywords at the beginning of your title tag. I will be giving you many pros and cons throughout this page so take good note of them.
Here are some “healthy” tips for your title tag:
  1. Keyword Relevancy: The keywords in your title tag should always be relevant to the content of your page. Not being relevant could get you ranked for something you didn’t even wish to get ranked for. Therefore you will attract the wrong visitors to your webpage.
  2. Being Specific: Don’t create a long title tag that explains everything your page is containing. Try to find a short specific explanation of what you have to offer and don’t forget to always include your keywords or keyword phrases. A web surfer should be able to know what your whole page is containing just by reading your page title.
  3. Amount of Keywords: Try sticking to 1 or 2 keyword or keyword phrases, 3 at max. Making your title very long and full of keywords isn’t good because search engines won’t rank for all of them. He will only note the first 70 characters. I suggest using a variation of keyword or keyword phrases on every web page title tag you have on your website.
Now here are some “unhealthy” tips for your title tag:
  1. Duplicate Titles: Never ever use the same title in your web pages. This can affect your rankings on the search engines as well as create confusion to the visitor as well. It is considered as duplicate content, so won’t serve you any good. Even if you optimized everything perfectly but your web pages contain duplicate content, you won’t get indexed and probably flagged for a review.
  2. Spamming Your Keywords: Don’t spam your keywords in your title tag because it won’t help you get ranked higher. As mentioned above, the first few keywords or keyword phrases have the most weight.
  3. Irrelevant Keywords: Using irrelevant keywords in your title tag is no good because you will attract the wrong people to your web pages. Find keywords that are relevant to your web page’s content. Your title tag should be a glimpse of what your web page is containing.
  4. No Title For a Page: Never leave a web page without a title. Create titles for every single web page because you wouldn’t want your title to display “Untitled” or even “New Page”. Even in pages where you cannot add keywords such as “contact us” pages and so on , you should still add a title saying “Contact Us | Company Name”.
