Meta tags, is the content that is only visible to search engines. Web surfers won’t be able to read what you write.
So basically, you have the meta description tag and the meta keywords tag. Most people don’t pay that much attention to the meta tags because they say that search engines don’t count them for rankings. That may be true for the keywords tag, but the description tag, although it might not help your rankings, it is definitely still used nowadays.
Meta Keywords Tag:
This tag creates a lot of confusion amongst many people. So let me talk about its history for a bit. In the past, search engines would index you and rank you as per the keywords in your meta keyword tag. What happened is that people started spamming that tag and pages that weren’t relevant with search queries would show up. Eventually, search engines caught on to this technique.
Today, search engines don’t use this at all anymore to rank you or even index you. Now the question asked is why should I lose my time on it then? Well the truth is that you lose nothing to put them; it could only do you good. The only thing meta keywords help search engines with is telling them what is your page containing.
Meta Description Tag:
This meta tag has very little weight for indexing and ranking, but is very important. The description tag is what the searcher will see right below the titles when he types in his query. Make sure to have a very precise and appealing description to attract the searcher to click on you. If you have no relevancy with the query the searcher looked for, there are big chances he won’t click on you.
Put in keywords that you think a searcher might look for so that all the chances to get a click are on your side. There is only a maximum of 160 characters that will be shown in the description tag, so use them wisely.
